Hi,
I stumbled onto this website whilst looking at details on Operation Dynamo and was very surprised to find NO detail whatever on the Battle OR Siege of Kohima.
This was a most vital time when the small garrison of 1500 held out for 14 days against 13,500 Japanese until relieved by the British 2nd Division. This was hand to hand fighting with no quarter given by either side. The Japanese invasion of India was halted at Kohima.
Slim likened it to the Somme and it was also called the Stalingrad of the East.
It was a major defeat for the Japanese from which they never recovered and it isn't mentioned on a list of battles from WW2 |
